In 1990, after Merlyn saw reports of a seriously ill young boy being transported round the North West by road ambulance (whilst hospitals searched for a bed for him) she began research into the inter-hospital transfer of children throughout the UK.
In 1999 Merlyn established Merlyn’s Air Care to raise money to purchase two dedicated intensive care helicopters – supported by specialised ground ambulances – specifically designed to help save the lives of these children.
The charity then began a further period of extensive research, which saw Merlyn and Tony Lewis visiting the US and Germany, to study the already established trauma services provided in those countries, and to understand operationally how this could be implemented in the British Isles.
As a result of the research, the charity plans to operate an inter-hospital, in-flight intensive care service for sick and injured children throughout the British Isles.
